چکیده

Abstract Changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) and aggregate stability as a result of agricultural practices have been extensively studied, but the extent these changes is site crop specific. In this study, SOC were evaluated under undisturbed grassland, cultivated pasture arable land uses northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The soils study sampled from 0–5, 5–10 10–20 cm depths Nitisol, Stagnosol Fluvisol, analysed for content stocks stability. all soils, was significantly lower cultivation (range 1.4 to 2.1%) compared grassland (3.4 4.2%) top 10 cm. followed similar trend uses. overall expressed mean weight diameter (MWD) also use (1.03 1.82 mm) (2.44 2.96 at except Stagnosol. MWD values equal soils. increased with up threshold 3.0–3.9% indicating importance aggregation. weak correlation suggests that other factors are important soil. loss decline over period 38 years continuous near surface layers two potentially problematic sustainability longer term.

Exploring the Roles of Agricultural Extension in Promoting Food Security in Kwazulu-Natal Province, South Africa

Household food security remains a challenge in South Africa. The national government instituted the Integrated Food Security Strategy (IFSS) programme which identifies household agricultural production as an important element of improving household-level food security. Agricultural extension is well positioned to help achieve this aim, but its current contribution is unknown. This study identif...

KwaZulu - Natal Durban 4041 , South Africa

We present an emergent universe scenario making use of a new solution of the Starobinsky model. The solution belongs to a one parameter family of solutions, where the parameter is determined by the number and the species (spin-values) of primordial fields. The general features of the model have also been studied. PACS numbers : 04.20.Jb, 98.80.Cq, 98.80.Jk Email: [email protected] Email: bc...

aggregate distribution of organic c, l-glutaminase activity and aggregate stability as affected by slope position

the location of extracellular enzyme activities in soil aggregates can be influenced by slope position. this study aims to determine the effect of slope position on aggregate distribution of organic c and l-glutaminase activity. the soils were collected from different slope positions (shoulder, backslope, footslope and toeslope) at two pasture ecosystems (fereydoonshahr and chelgerd, central ir...

Gender, Migration and HIV in Rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

OBJECTIVES Research on migration and HIV has largely focused on male migration, often failing to measure HIV risks associated with migration for women. We aimed to establish whether associations between migration and HIV infection differ for women and men, and identify possible mechanisms by which women's migration contributes to their high infection risk. DESIGN Data on socio-demographic cha...
